15 Feb 2010 - ASD re-opens to new members
![]()
After a rather long holiday, we're back in our new Symbian Foundation livery. The ASD exam programme has now been restarted and we are ready to welcome new members on board.
12 Nov 2009 - Update on the current status of the ASD exam
We've had a lot of enquiries about the exam and when it will restart. We've summarised here the answers to questions that we've had recently about restarting the ASD exams.
What will be tested?
The published curriculum may be amended in the near future, but we've set the new exam up so that you don't need to learn anything different for the time being. So no need to worry about getting any surprises in the exam if you concentrate on Curriculum v2.1 and use the ASD Primer as your study guide.
What changes are there?
Most of our changes are to remove or renew individual questions, not the learning points they address. And at the same time we are going through a re-branding exercise with the intention of aligning with the Symbian Foundation branding.
When?
We had hoped to be up and running on 1st November, but the approvals process is taking longer than we had expected (we have several partners that need to collectively agree and approve the changes).
Anything else?
We're moving to a not-for-profit model, which means the exam pricing will come down. To do this, we need a sponsor to cover the operating costs of the exam infrastructure. Getting that finalised is the main task to complete before we can restart the exams.
Thanks for your patience, and sorry about the delay.
01 July 2009 - ASD temporarily closed to new members
Now that we're working closely with the Symbian Foundation we're developing plans for some exciting updates to the ASD scheme. While these are being formalised and implemented, the ASD exams will be suspended and we will temporarily close the scheme to new applicants. The ASD exams will not be available either on-line or through our partner networks. All existing accreditations will of course remain valid, and all other activities are unaffected while we work on the transition. We expect to have the system re-vamped in time for a re-launch announcement at SEE 2009 at the end of October.
31 January 2009 - Majinate announce launch of ASD Approved Trainer Programme
This programme differentiates and increases the standing of Symbian OS training organisations by showing that they have a higher level of commitment to formalised Symbian OS training, embodied by our Code of Practice, and leading to recognised professional qualifications. The scheme is open to commercial and academic organisations: more details coming soon.

10 October 2008 - The new ASD curriculum and exam V2.1 go live
Every year, the ASD curriculum is reviewed, and where necessary it and the associated exam are changed to reflect current practice in Symbian OS development. This year's review resulted in the release today of V2.1 of the ASD exam. As of today, all new exams will use version 2.1 unless specifically requested by the candidate. V2 will be completely withdrawn on 22nd October.
Alongside the changes in the curriculum (see here), the following changes have been introduced:
-
All candidates now receive a display of their results upon completion of the exam. This can be compared immediately with the pass mark (see here) avoiding the need to wait for notification from us or your supervisor. Exams now have a simpler pricing structure, see http://www.majinate.com/takeexam.html.
-
Supervisors will deliver an analysis of results broken down by sub-topic on completion; unsupervised candidates will receive this via email.
-
All certificates will now carry an identifier with the version of the exam that the candidate passed
-
The Majinate web site now carries a section showing which versions of the exam are still valid: see http://www.majinate.com/faqs.html#twentyseven
These changes make the ASD exam an even more useful tool for targeting training and identifying the most able developers in any team.
01 August 2008 - The ASD curriculum is being updated from October 2008
We review the ASD curriculum every year to make sure it is up to date with changes to the operating system and 2008 was no exception. The changes are minor this year and accreditations will not need to be renewed as quickly as usual as a consequence: this is reflected in the new version numbering scheme as well. You can find more details at the new curriculum. The exam to reflect these changes will be released on 1st October 2008. Accreditations under exams v2 & v2.1 will be valid until at least January 2010.
25 July 2008 - Majinate will be participating at the Smartphone Show October 21st to 22nd
With this year's show focusing again on developers, Majinate is working with Symbian to ensure that the ASD scheme is once again well represented at the event. There'll be a chance to meet the people who run the scheme, to find out what you need to know to pass the exam, take an appropriate training session and to sit the exam either at the show or shortly afterwards.
